This Hickok 539B is about as good as it gets when it comes to vintage tube testers.

I purchased it specifically because I had a group of Western Electric "tennis ball" tubes that I wanted to test properly, and the 539B was recommended to me as one of the best testers for the job. I tested roughly 30 of those tubes and probably another 100 tubes since buying it, with most of that use happening during the first few months. Since then, I've mostly pulled it out every month or so when I had an older Western Electric tube to test.

It's an incredible machine, but I simply have too many tube testers and need to free up some bench space and funds for other purchases.

CALIBRATED & DIGITAL METER UPGRADE

This tester was professionally calibrated in November 2024 by Hickok Meters, as shown on the calibration sticker. During the work, a digital meter was also installed, which makes getting precise readings much easier than trying to estimate between the lines on the original analog meter.

The digital meter displays a percentage of the selected range. For example, in the photos I am testing a 6L6 on the 6,000 range. The meter reads .788:

6,000 × .788 = 4,728 micromhos

So instead of trying to judge exactly where the needle falls on the original scale, you can calculate a very precise GM reading.

CONDITION

The tester itself is in exceptional condition. I tried to find blemishes on the control panel and interior, and there really isn't much to point out. It's hard to find a 539B this clean.

The outer case is solid and in very good condition for its age, with some normal cosmetic blemishes that can be seen in the photos. For bench use, the top lid comes off easily and can simply be stored away.

The roll chart works properly. It does have a little play in the mechanism, but I've used it without any problems.

Also included is the top-cap test cable and a CD containing the setup charts and other information for the tester.

This is one of those "holy grail" tube testers — a beautiful Hickok 539B that has been professionally calibrated and upgraded with a digital meter. If you've been looking for a serious tester for your bench, this is a particularly nice example.

SHIPPING / LOCAL PICKUP

This is a very large and heavy tester, and I will pack it carefully for safe shipment. Please check the shipping section of the listing for available shipping options.

Local pickup is also welcome, and you're welcome to test the machine while you're here. There's nothing to hide with this tester. If you purchase it with shipping and decide to pick it up instead, I will refund the shipping charge after pickup.
